I've received traffic to my blog regarding Adam Skidmore, and I can only presume it's in light of recent media directed to him by news.com.au.
Thought it might be wise for me then, to share my perspective on someone who I consider to be a great surgeon.
Let me start by saying, I don't want to speculate on what the media is reporting. I don't trust many of the news.com.au reports at any rate. A simple Google search on Adam Skidmore confirms that they have been the only news network that has covered this story, and it was released on a Sunday so it does show the news worthiness of what's transpired.
I simply want to tell you my experience.
My initial consult with Adam, I took my sister with me. My referring doctor, Sharon Marks, is someone who I trust immensely When she told me I was out of control and needed surgery, I complied. When she also told me there was one surgeon she trusted, and was willing to refer me to I went. She took my case that seriously, she asked for family to go with me to see Adam.
What this was telling me was that I was entering into a very high risk surgery and that this journey, for lack of better description, was just about to get extremely real for me.
So we went to see Adam, and I trust my sister's judgement of character. My sister has this "no bullshit" appeal about her - basically, she won't put up with any and she fell in love with Adam's no nonsense approach. He was straight down the line, he was determined, and confident. I felt safe, assured and was willing to trust this man.
He laid before me all the risks I was up for. He was taking on a patient that was nearly 250kg, in an operation that whilst was desperately needed, was a great risk for me to take on. He wanted to go there though, because he could see in me that every effort thus far had been futile, and he believed everyone deserved an opportunity to better look after themselves. He made me realise that it wouldn't be an easy feat, and I had to be prepared for a longer stay than most.
I was one of those patients who should have only been in hospital for three days, and I wasn't. I was in for 8 days, and I'm glad. Here's why. I was extremely overweight and 18 months prior I had nearly lost my life to pulmonary emboli. If I had to stay in hospital for 8 weeks after because of these risks, I was going to take it.
It turned out that the doctor who worked alongside Adam Skidmore felt I was at risk of another emboli, and at Adam's instructions I stayed longer. Tests concluded that what might have been emboli was actually scar tissue from the damage created from the last emboli. So the bonus for me was that I walked away with more knowledge about my body. For example, because I know of this scar tissue, I now know that it's always going to be extra complicated for me when I get a common cold. Consequence of this knowledge is I do my best to avoid getting common colds!
Adam had made me aware of his experiences, and answered a lot of questions I had. He had also mentioned to me that he felt the gastric sleeve was the best option for me. I asked him about lap band, and he said that with how I presented psychologically it wasn't an option. He stated that most of his lap band surgeries were lap band removals and stomach repairs because patients had been irresponsible with their lap bands and damaged themselves.
It comes as no surprise then, that he has a list of patients that need to stay in hospital longer than expected. Adam takes on the surgeries that are not easy. He takes on the cases that require time, dedication and something else to add, the after care is exceptional. I have access to psychology, dietitians and Adam's expertise, and that of his colleague Phillip Cheong. I am more than happy with my experience with Adam, and you ought to be as well. You do take a risk in having this surgery, but you're life is at risk at any rate. Take that chance on someone who is proven.
90kg in 10 months. He has helped me.
He can help you too, and if your doctor has endorsed him to you, then take it.
Cheers.

He operated on a family member of mine who subsequently died due to the surgery he performed.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a positive experience. I and my family did not and unfortunately I would never recommend him as a surgeon.
I can only apologise for your experience, death is an awful thing to face. It respects no one, and leaves a trail of hurt. I hope you and your family find comfort and solace in each other.
ReplyDeleteI could only reflect on my experience, which I have and it was in response to the increase of traffic I get to my blog. I usually get about 3 hits a day if I'm lucky, and it jumped up to about 30-50 since Sunday and the analytics said it was people doing word searches on his name. So I felt I should respond.
As a nurse who cared for a very large majority of patients that were operated on by Mr Skidmore, all I will say to anyone reading this is PLEASE do not use him, or recommend him. It is just not worth it to put yourself or a loved one at risk like that.
ReplyDeleteWe were actually fearful of getting his patients because of how sick they could become. We saved the lives of many of his patients, and we saw patients go to hell and back during long unnecessary hospital stays. Some will never be the same again - physically or mentally.
The complications with his patients were above and beyond what we saw from other surgeons' patients. So significantly higher, as much as we liked him as a person, it became impossible to ignore.
It is not admirable that he took on such complex patients. Many would comment that other surgeons had turned them away due to them not being fit for surgery - the responsible thing for a surgeon to do.
I'm genuinely glad (and relieved), Nicky, that you had a good experience - and thank you for sharing. I am sorry, Anonymous, for your loss. But I feel a responsibility, to let you know that the news article in the Sun was not a surprise to the nurses who witnessed the horror first hand. In fact, it was a relief, and proves to us that the system works to protect the public.
Thanks for your time.

DeleteI have witnessed him treat patients from other facilities with severe complications and bring them back from the brink of death.
He is caring corteous and a great doctor. His patients all like him.
To the nurse above, I'm not sure where you work, but his complication rate is the same if not significantly better than other clinicians.
It is admirable that he took on such complex patients, especially after have long discussions with them and thier families, and provoding close follow up after the procedures.
Great to hear you had a good experience Nicky
Thanks Anonymous#2 for your commentary. As I stated, I can only account for my experience, noting the increase of traffic I was getting as I had mentioned him in earlier blogs. He was clear, honest and upfront with me in my dealings with him. I was well aware of the risks involved and weighed up options with family, friends and my psychologist for weeks before I said yes to surgery. Whilst appreciating your comments, it is debatable whether it is admirable or not to take on difficult cases.
ReplyDeleteYou have the perspective of the care after the fact, and it's a well informed opinion and one that has to be respected. My perspective differs because it's from the perspective of the one who needed the risk to be taken on because nothing else was working. I would also imagine, whether fit for surgery or not, any surgery will always be a risk.
I guess the factor I don't know is why they were his patients at any rate. The condition possibly could intensify the risks involved, I suspect. I'm just appreciating the variety of services he offered, and perhaps ailments of his patients were more traumatic than mine.
Thank you for sharing, I'll never deny the other side of the fence and I appreciate the spirit with which you have shared.
Nicky
Nicky,
DeleteI understand everyone has their experiences, some not so good. However, I will support you in your comments 110%. Adam Skidmore is a professional, caring & understanding Surgeon who know what his Weight-loss patients need and helps them obtain that.
I've had a LapBand Surgery with him, that unfortunately had to be removed (DEFINITELY NOT his fault), and have just recently had Gastric Sleeve surgery with him and could not thank him and his team enough.
What people need to realise is Adam, works on HIGH risk patients who are Morbidly Obese that other surgeons would not even look at. Patients who are at the end of the road with their weight. He give us hope and a future, he gives us a reason to live and now live a happier and healthier life.
I know for me, I don't know where I'd be right now without Adam and his understanding, yet commitment to his patients.
I will be eternally grateful to Adam Skidmore & his team for the rest of my life and can not speak more highly of him.
Tara
